[The Archbishop of Westminster.] ... Did you ever read about the bringing of the pallium to the new Archbishop of Westminster and how seemly all was done, and how the King of Trebizonde (if it were I) sent the Archbishop of Trebizonde to sing at the investiture. Yes, really Trebizonde id there in print - and he sang at the mass, and how the standard of the great King was given him afterwards. Can you withhold your consent any longer to my going under that standard? What stops me? ... The standard of the great king - doesn't your heart leap to it - what a banner. Did you read about the Pope's life from morning to night - ah! so bonny, and then to think of Mrs. B-. Oh! England!

Why, even for its highest orders what shameful names it has - what incredible secrets of the dressing-room in the order of the Bath and of the Garter! and over there is the order of the Holy Ghost, and of the Golden Rose - but time has miracles (as we know) and some day this land may yet be the island of refuge for all the poetry in the world. I don't want it to be; it's so nice for it to be everywhere. ...
