[Natural Science.] ... Do you know why the worms glow? Aren't they all little he-worms - Tom worms who make themselves shine for their true loves. Somebody told me so, but my scientific facts are funny, and can't be depended on, and I reshape them to my heart's desire, but someone did tell me that, that they shine for the same reason that Hero held her candle over the Hellespont - only it's Leander that waits, and Hero that swims. I'll put it in my scientific catechism for Angela, for I shall make little books of selected wisdom for her. I have begun a geography with maps and Rome is in the middle of the world - there will be no America in that book, nor South Africa nor Australia - and Germany shall be covered with Black Forrest; no Russia either, but a North Sea full of ships like a garden - and I shall make her a history as I should have liked history to have been - Cromwell's head cut off and Louis XIV instead of the other one's - and Nelson happily married to Lady hamilton.
