Fitzwilliam Account book 1898 June 30 Hawarden design 150 A highly unusual watercolour, as Burne-Jones naturally left negotiations with the client for Morris & Co. to deal with. The production of a scale drawing was usually left to an in-house designer but as this was commissioned by the family of W E Galdstone, to commemorate his active life and as both Gladstone and his daughter Mary were close friends, he supervised all the stages in production. In addition, Morris had recently died and he did not completely trust Dearle to satisfy his own perfectionism. The eventual window served as a memorial to Gladstone as he died during its manufacture.
