This design was probably one of a series of potential designs executed by Morris & Co., for St. Philip's Cathedral in Birmingham. It is after a Burne-Jones cartoon executed in 1874, now in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. This design does not come from the studio of Burne-Jones, as the paper the watercolour was executed on bears the clear pre-printed inscription of 'Property of Morris & Co./ Merton Abbey/ Surrey'. This watercolour was a gift of Mr. P.B. Chatwin, who upon its presentation to Birmingham's collection in 1942 stated, 'When my father first suggested the window he gave a rough idea of what he thought required. When this design arrived he was much disappointed as the scale was altogether different from what he wanted. He did not like the job of having to say he was dissatisfied, but his criticism was understood and the next new design was forthcoming.'
