Originally designed as St Dorothy in 1873 for St Martin's Church, Scarborough, this panel was adapted by substituting a lily for the original spray of apples and made for St Saviour, Warwick Avenue, Paddington, London in 1925
Believed to be one of the four lights from the Lady Chapel of St Saviour, Warwick Avenue, London, the window was situated on the south wall. The Virgin had St Dorothy to her right and below was an Angel of the Resurrection, and the Two Marys at the Sepulchre. The design for the figure is an adaptation of Edward Burne Jones's cartoon of St Dorothy originally drawn for a window in St Martin's church, Scarborough in 1873. Christie's wishes to thank Peter Cormack, Keeper of the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow for assistance with this lot.
This glass panel was painted by "Chadwick" and dates from 1925 cited in the Morris & Co. Catalogue of Designs for Windows executed from 1st July 1916 (Sandford Berger Collection Hunting ton Library, USA)
